I almost don’t care

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

Two men embracing each other affectionatly

It was his sixth attempt, he cursed bitterly and stared angrily at the drawing. It lacked something, the edges were too rough? The smile a bit too skewed? He sighed and crumbled the paper, throwing it haphazardly.

“Hey babe!” a voice called behind him. It was a soft voice, with a unique quirkiness that he knew so well. He turned around, and there was Kezzie. His mass hair standing out, a big shy grin playing on his face. He was wearing a long shirt that almost draped over his slim shoulder. Sam wanted to reach over and wrap him in his arms, and kiss off that shy grin he was giving him. He fidgeted a little, but held himself in place. They were in public, and there were still people who didn’t like seeing two guys making out.

Instead he reached out his hand playfully and pulled Kezzie to sit next to him. Kezzie gave yelped and half sat on Sam’s lap. He swatted Sam on his shoulder, chuckling.

“Do you want us to get stoned to death?” Kezzie whispered, his face, too close to Sam. Sam glanced at Kezzie’s lips, heart picking up speed.

“I almost don’t care,” Sam responded hoarsely, leaning in to close the gap between them. Kezzie pushed him away, glancing around nervously. He shifted so that he was on the bench next to Sam, shoulders touching, not wanting to completely lose the warmth.

“Stupid,” Kezzie said chuckling. He could still feel Sam’s eyes on him. He tried to shift the conversation to something else, because god knows how much he wanted to reach over and k-

“So what’s with the sighing?” Kezzie asked hastily, trying to bury his thoughts.

Sam finally distracted enough to look away from Kezzie, grunted, “I can’t get this scene right.”

Kezzie picked up the comic script and read it silently. He put it down and looked at Sam.

“Let’s see what you have so far then.”

Sam shrugged and pushed his many attempts towards Kezzie, looking defeated. Kezzie looked at the drawing face unreadable. Sam kept glancing between him and his drawings, growing more and more nervous.

Finally, Kezzie looked up a gentle smile playing on his lips.

“Oh babe. They are great!” Kezzie said, pride evident in his voice.

Sam blinked surprised, and grinned uncertainly.

“You sure?”

Kezzie nodded, leafing through the drawings.

“Sure, sure. You are just being way too hard on yourself,” Kezzie said, then looking up at Sam, he couldn’t help but add, “You are perfect.”

Sam’s grin faltered and was replaced by an adoring smile. It was a smile that was reserved just for Kezzie. Sam leaned in close to Kezzie, expecting his boyfriend to push him away like he usually did in public. But Kezzie wore a teasing smile, eyes star bright, his face expectant. Sam hesitated, but then his eyes shot up in surprise when it was Kezzie who closed the gap, his lips landing on his.

He didn’t know how long the kiss was, but it felt like forever, and in that eternity, they forgot about the world around them.
